On the day the new Viagra drugmaker finally admitted that it had ordered its sexual dysfunction drug, the Wall Street Journal says it's "not a good day." It says: "There are some people who are having problems getting their lives back." But the FDA says, "Viagra is not the best day for sexual activity. That's not the reason for the drugs' approval."
The new drug is a bit more complex. "The FDA is concerned that the drugs' use of Viagra could result in increased sexual activity in women," says James B. Thompson, MD, director of the Food and Drug Administration's Office of Compliance for the FDA. And he says, "The agency believes that the drug could potentially cause sexual side effects in men with certain conditions."
The drug's manufacturer, Eli Lilly, did not admit that it had ordered Viagra from the company that made the drug. However, it says that the company had not yet received any notice from the FDA of any of its plans to market a generic version. But the FDA said the drugs were still being studied and were not yet ready to market, and that the FDA has also been "reviewing the studies that have been submitted to the agency."
The New York Times reports that there was an official launch of Viagra, which is currently only available by prescription in the United States. "The drugmaker, Eli Lilly, made a bold move by launching a generic version of Viagra in the United States in April 1998," the story says. "In May, the company began to market a generic version of Viagra, marketed as Propecia."
But a New York Times reporter, Robert F. Kennedy, has been caught out by the news media. In a letter to the New York Times, he says that the company had not yet received any notice from the FDA of any of its plans to market a generic version of Viagra. The FDA says there is no indication that it had received any notice, but it says the drug is not likely to be marketed. In a press release released with the drugmaker's name on its label, the FDA says it is "reviewing the studies submitted to the agency for the development and approval of a generic version of sildenafil citrate, vardenafil hydrochloride, vardenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil and avanafil."
The drugmaker's CEO, Peter J. Grunenthaler, who is now based in New York, says the FDA has reviewed the studies and will make a decision as soon as possible. "We have a long way to go to determine if the drugs approved by the FDA have a favorable safety and efficacy profile," Grunenthalenthaler says.
A company spokesman says that although Viagra was approved in 1998, it was still considered a "provisional" drug in the United States, meaning there could be no guarantee that the drug will reach the market in the future. "We don't know that," the spokesman adds.
But Viagra, the drug that Pfizer invented in the 1990s to help men with erectile dysfunction, is still considered "the most effective drug" in the United States. And the drug is also the most widely available, with more than 40 million prescriptions for erectile dysfunction and 60 million prescriptions for the other conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, depression and anxiety. That's the second-biggest drug brand in the United States, and it is the second-biggest market, with prescriptions for Viagra reaching more than $1 billion each year.
The FDA is still investigating the possible side effects of the drugs, and there is no way to know whether the drug will be marketed or not. But it says there are a few things the agency still doesn't yet have a full picture of the drugs' effects on the male body.
